The earliest phase of rock art in northern Africa, between 12,000 and 8000 bc , in which large-scale carvings of animals appeared. These early engravings - in southern Oran, Algeria, and Libya - reflect a hunting economy based on the now-extinct giant buffalo Homoioceras antiquus or Bubalus antiquus (hence the name).
