Site in southwest Scotland on the shore of Solway Firth, of one of the oldest Christian centers in Britain, founded c 397 AD by St. Ninian. He built a small whitewashed stone church on the site of which a monastery was built about 1130. St. Ninian's Shrine was a popular place of pilgrimage until the Protestant Reformation.
