American anthropologist best known for his theories of the evolution of culture and for the scientific study of culture that he called "culturology" (the study of culture as an independent entity). His views were important to the development of processual archaeology - seeing culture as a system and the evolutionary development of societies for the capture of greater amounts of energy which was facilitated by technological development.
