The characteristic dress of the Roman citizen. It underwent many changes of form, and, not being a rigid garment, was capable of an infinite variety of folds. But generally it was an oblong piece of cloth, which enveloped the body. One end of it was then brought from behind under the right arm, passed across the body, then thrown over the left shoulder, until it reached the ground behind.
