Roman city in central Italy, captured by Rome in the 4th century BC and later a fashionable resort with fine villas. It received Roman citizenship in 90 BC. It is important for its architecture. There are remains of wealthy Roman residences, including Hadrian's (118-128 AD) - the largest and most sumptuous imperial villa in the Roman Empire. It contained palaces, libraries, guest quarters, public baths, and two theatres. Among other surviving Roman monuments are two small temples and the great temple of Hercules Victor (Ercole Vincitore), remains of aqueducts, and poet Horace's Sabine farm.
