Large units of the Byzantine armed forces in the period of the 7th-10th centuries AD. Each themata was governed by a strategos (general). The original five large thematas were subdivided to form smaller units, while many new thematas were added along the frontier during the period of reconquests by the Byzantines in the late 9th-10th centuries.
