The name used by the Incas for their empire, literally "the four inextricably linked quarters". By 1532 the Inca state had incorporated dozens of coastal and highland ethnic groups stretching from what is now the northern border of Ecuador to Mendoza in west-central Argentina and the Maule River in central Chile - at least 12 million people.
