Large herbaceous plant of tropical Asian origin, rich in starch and a staple food in the Pacific Islands and Oceania. The tubers are consumed as cooked vegetable and made into puddings and breads, and also made into the Polynesian poi, a thin, pasty, highly digestible mass of fermented taro starch.
