American anthropologist who was a pioneer of Plains archaeology and one of the founders of modern Peruvian archaeology. He excavated extensively on coast of Nazca, in Pachacamac, Paracas, and Viru Valley. He also worked on south coast and defined stylistic relationships between the various pre-Inca cultures of the area. Strong helped developed the Direct Historical Approach of working back through archaeological sequences from the known historical past.
