The major north Russian town of Staraja Ladoga was founded in the 10th century on the left bank of the river Volkhow, 20 km from its outlet in Lake Ladoga close to the eastern end of the Baltic Sea. Excavations have revealed that the early town covered at least 9000 square metres and was enclosed by a strong earthen bank. Although Scandinavian material has been discovered here, the Russians firmly contend that the town is Slavic in character and origin. It is seen by many as the precursor of Novgorod.
