The term in reference to Sangamonian Age is a major North American geochronological subdivision of the Pleistocene epoch from c 125 000-75 000 bp. The Sangamon comprises a range of sediments including organic sediment but is represented mainly by a warm climate palaesol the Sangamon geosol which overlies Illinoian Age tills and is covered by Wisconsinan Age loess and tills. It appears to represent one single interglacial. As a "stage" it is a chronostratigraphic subdivision of the Pleistocene.
