Mesoamerican archaeologist and epigrapher born in Siberia who worked to decipher the Maya glyphs. She established the use of stelae to document dynastic sequences and deciphered glyphs of conflicts, adding substantially to an understanding of the Maya civilization. She wrote "An Album of Maya Architecture" (1963 1978).
