A pioneering example of historical archaeology in the Northern Territory of Australia. There are surviving structures of a Victoria military settlement of 1838-1849 when the British tried to settle tropical Australia. There is evidence of Aboriginal presence at the site. Relics of the settlement are preserved in the Cobourg Marine Park.
