Quarrying in 1856 revealed a small cave in the Neanderthal or Neander Valley near Dusseldorf in West Germany, and in it a skull cap and some other bones. Similar long low skulls with brow ridges are now known to be typical of the Mousterian period, perhaps in the range 100,000 to 40,000 years ago, and are often called Neanderthal man.
