The native Polynesian inhabitants of the Chatham Islands, east of New Zealand. The Moriori, who were heavily dependent on marine resources, are thought to have settled the islands from New Zealand about AD 1400. They were conquered, enslaved, and assimilated by Maori immigrants in the mid-1800s.
