Large, fertile southern plain of Crete, exploited since the later Neolithic. The Minoan palace of Phaistos and Gortyn, the capital of the Roman province of Crete and Cyrenaica, are the two main archaeological sites. The tholoi, or beehive tombs, were developed on the Mesara plain.
