Maximian, Roman emperor from 286 to 305, nicknamed Herculius, ruled alongside Diocletian. He faced challenges, suppressing Gaul rebels in 285, battling Germanic tribes, and launching a campaign against the Bagaudae. Carausius rebelled in 286, leading to the secession of Britain. Maximian failed to oust him and faced setbacks against pirates and Berber incursions. He abdicated in 305 but resumed the title in 306 to support his son Maxentius' rebellion. Forced to renounce his claim in 308, he attempted to seize Constantine's title in 310, leading to his capture and suicide on Constantine's orders. Initially purged from public places, his image was later rehabilitated after Constantine's victory over Maxentius, and he was deified.
