A fiber obtained from the fleshy-leafed agave plant of tropical America and used for rope and cordage. Native Americans ate both the flowerhead, which they harvested after it had bloomed, and the heart of the maguey, which they prepared by digging up the entire plant and roasting it in earth ovens for 24-72 hours.
