A fine white porcelain clay formed by the weathering of volcanic rocks. Kaolin is named after the hill in China (Kao-ling) that yielded the first clay of this type sent to Europe. This soft white clay is an essential ingredient in the manufacture of china and porcelain and is widely used in the making of paper, rubber, paint, and many other products.
