A small carnivorous mammal and species of mongoose that kills snakes and destroys crocodile eggs. The ichneumon and the shrewmouse were both associated with the sun god. Ichneumons in particular were often buried in the Late and Greco-Roman periods and many bronze statuettes of them are known. The creature is also portrayed in a number of Egyptian Old Kingdom tombs such as that of the 5th Dynasty noble Ty (c 2400 BC).
