Term commonly used of the generalized Greek, or Greek-dominated civilization of the Eastern Mediterrean and the Near East, from the death of Alexander the Great (323 bc) up to the arrival of the Roman Empire (say 30 bc). A common form of the Greek language, Koine [Greek: ‘common’] developed, which was largely indebted to Attic Greek.
