A promontory on the southern tip of Spain known for its cave sites with remains of Neanderthal man and stone tools of the Middle and Upper Palaeolithic. The first Neanderthal skull ever found came from Forbes Quarry in 1848. A second, juvenile, Neanderthal was found in 1926 at Devil's Tower. The third, with the Mousterian and Upper Palaeolithic, is Gorham's Cave.

Cave sites on the island of Gibraltar in the western Mediterranean have revealed remains of Neanderthal man and stone tools. The first Neanderthal skull ever found came from Forbes Quarry, Gibraltar, in 1848. A second, juvenile, Neanderthal was found in 1926 at Devil’s Tower. A third cave revealed Mousterian and Upper Palaeolithic levels.
