An Iron Age oppidum and capital of the Averni, in Puy de-Dôme, France. Vercingetorix, the Gallic chief, took refuge there in 52 BC and repulsed Julius Caesar's attempts to capture the site - the first outright defeat of Caesar in Gaul. It is an historic monument.
