The use of ethnographic data to study contemporary cultures; one of the four subdisciplines of cultural anthropology. The study of the varieties of the human race in a comparative analysis to understand how they work and why they change. Ethnology is a term more widely used in Europe, and encompasses the analytical and comparative study of cultures in general, which in American usage is the academic field known as cultural anthropology (in British usage, social anthropology).
