French archaeologist and author of monographs on Mont Beuvray (Bibracte) and decorated pottery vases of Roman Gaul and a four-volume manual of prehistoric archaeology (Manuel d'Archéologie Préhistorique, Celtique, et Gallo-romaine; 1908-1915) which greatly influenced protohistoric studies in France. His works are considered some of the finest in the history of European archaeology. The author was killed in World War I when only two volumes had been published; Albert Grenier completed his work.
