A large Maya ceremonial site in northwest Yucatan Peninsula, one of the largest Mayan cities ever built, covering 50 square miles and having a maximum population of over 50,000 around 1000 AD. Its occupation was continuous from 500 BC to the late Classic and Early Post-Classic, from 600-1000 AD, but the population dropped to less than 10% of its former size form 1000-1200 AD. Its earliest occupation is denoted by Mamon ceramics and Chicanel structures. The site centers around the Cenote Xlacah, with major plazas, the Temple of Seven Dolls, pyramids, platforms, and numerous causeways (sache) converge in the middle of the site. It may have been the capital of the Maya civilization.
