A Dutch palaeoanthropologist and anatomist who discovered Java man, the first known fossil of Homo erectus, in 1891. Dubois named the fossils Pithecanthropus erectus to indicate an intermediate phase in the evolution then believed to proceed from simian ancestors having the upright posture of modern man. For years there was much controversy over his finds, until reexamined in 1923.
