(1862-1914). French archaeologist who produced a masterly synthesis of European prehistory in the early part of this century. Entitled Manuel d’Archeol-ogie Préhistorique, Celtique et Gallo-romaine, the first volume — on prehistory — was published in 1908; the second part came out in separate volumes, that on the Bronze Age in 1910, on Hallstatt in 1913, and La Tène in 1915 (completed by Albert Grenier after Déchelette’s death early in World War I).
