A small, coarse pottery (or other refractory material) vessel used for holding molten metal during smelting, testing, or casting. It is usually easily recognizable from the effects of the high temperatures to which it has been subjected, as well as from its shape and thickness. Crucibles were probably so named from the Latin word crux, "cross" or "trial.
