The earliest cosmetics known to archaeologists were in use in Egypt in the fourth millennium BC, with evidence among funerary artifacts of eye makeup and scented unguents. Both Egyptian men and women used oils, perfumes, and eye paints. By the start of the Christian era, cosmetics were in wide use in the Roman Empire.
