A plate or rod of bone, bronze, leather, or another metal that is attached to the lower rim of a helmet to protect the wearer's cheeks. It is also the name of an attachment from a horse bit to the reins, comprising a crescentic section of brow tine from a red deer's antler, perforated with a central hole or slot for the soft mouthpiece of rope or leather, with perforations above and below for a bifurcate rein. Early examples are found in the early Bronze Age of the Carpathian Basin dating to the mid 2nd millennium BC; they appear soon afterwards in northern and western Europe, although generally less heavily decorated than their southern counterparts.
