A cave near Oudtshoom in the Folded Mountain Belt of the Cape Province, South Africa, containing a long sequence of Upper Pleistocene and Holocene deposits. The earliest occupation probably took place some 80,000 years ago. Following a long ‘Middle Stone Age’ sequence which has not yet been reported in detail, there are successive occupations attributed to the Robberg, Albany and Wilton industries. Excellent conditions of preservation combined with meticulous excavation methods have yielded a wealth of information concerning the exploitation of vegetable and animal foods through this long sequence. By the 3rd century ad domestic small stock are attested.
