A Roman colony and stronghold of the Salassi that lies at the foot of the Italian Alps. The Romans subdued a Celtic tribe in 25 BC and Augustus founded a Roman town (Augusta Praetoria) there in 24 BC. The remains of the rectangular circuit of walls, gates, forum, theater, amphitheater, and an Augustan triumphal arch are on the site.
