A culture area originally defined on the basis of shared traits such as the developments of agriculture, urbanization and elaborate ceremonial practice. Centered on the modem states of Mexico, Guatemala, Belize and El Salvador, its northern borders are the deserts of Sinaloa, Durango and Tamaulipas. The southern extent is less clearly defined but would certainly include parts of Honduras, Nicaragua and possibly Costa Rica. An immense environmental diversity is enclosed within this area and numerous examples of advanced civilization have developed here (see Olmec, Maya, Teotihuacan, Aztec). In recent years the term has been applied to the geographic area alone, without being limited by the defining traits named above.
