An intoxicating drink prepared from the crushed, chewed, or pounded aromatic roots of the Polynesian shrub Piper methysticum or Macropiper latifolium. Kava was drunk at ceremonial events in Fiji, and other parts of central and eastern Oceania. The term also refers to the plant and the root.
