An Islamic dynasty that seized power from the earlier Abbasid dynasty in Tunisia in 909. The Fatimids subsequently conquered Egypt (in 969), which they then dominated for some two centuries. Much Fatimid architecture survives, including mosques, palaces and elaborately decorated chamber tombs. See also Ajdabiyah, Cairo and Mahdiya.
