The name of four Egyptian monarchs of the 18th Dynasty, early New Kingdom. Thutmose I (ruled 1493-c 1482 BC), Thutmose II (ruled c 1482-1479 BC), Thutmose III (ruled 1479-1426 BC), and Thutmose IV (ruled 1400-1390 BC). Thutmose III is regarded as the greatest of the rulers of ancient Egypt. Thutmose III brought the Egyptian empire to the zenith of its power by conquering all of Syria, defeating the Mitannians, and penetrating south along the Nile to Napata in the Sudan. He also built a great number of temples and monuments to commemorate his deeds. Thumose I and II actively extended the empire through military campaigns in Palestine and Nubia.
