Site in southern Sakhalin, eastern Russia, an island off the coast of Siberia, dating to the last few centuries BC-first few centuries AD. It was the first appearance in that area of a true maritime economy of sea-mammal hunters using efficient harpoons. It is probably a settlement of a group coming from the north. Later, this way of life spread further south into northern Hokkaido (Japan), where it appears in the Okhotsk culture.
