An ancient Greek city-state - a state incorporating a city, smaller towns and villages. The polis centered on one town, but included the surrounding countryside. The town contained a citadel on raised ground (acropolis) and a marketplace (agora). The city-state in Greece probably originated from the natural divisions of the country by mountains and the sea and from the original local tribal (ethnic) and cult divisions. There were several hundred poleis.
