It was first established as a small Egyptian fortress in the Middle Kingdom (2055-1650 BC) and continued in use in the 18th to 19th Dynasties (1550-1186 BC) with the construction of five Egyptian temples.

A former capital of the Nubian kingdom of Nobatia on the west bank of the Nile near Wadi Haifa, Faras is best known for the magnificent cathedral which was erected there in the 7th century and flourished until the 12th century. Fine mural paintings were recovered during excavation, together with inscriptions of major historical value; the study of super-impositions has enabled a detailed record of stylistic development to be established.
