Important archaeological site in the Amaràvatî region of northern Champa, now central Vietnam. The main building is a big monastery built in brick and dedicated to Lokesvara by king Indravarman II in 875. This is the first evidence of the existence of Mahayana Buddhism in Champa; it is also recognized as a particular style in Cham art. A bronze Buddha figure of the Amaravati-style (2nd-4th century) has been found on the site. See also Buddhism.
