The year 2025 has marked a significant development in Anatolian archaeology. For the first time, archaeological excavations have begun at the ancient city of Colossae, located within the district of Honaz in Denizli. The work is being carried out on behalf of Pamukkale University, with the permission and support of the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Culture and Tourism, General Directorate of Cultural Heritage and Museums.

After many years of scholarly research and surface surveys, the excavation season has finally opened at Colossae.

Colossae: The Silent Witness of Asia Minor
Situated in the ancient region of Phrygia, within the Lycus River Valley, Colossae was a significant settlement in antiquity. Its strategic location allowed it to thrive along ancient trade routes. The city maintained its presence during the Roman Imperial period but stands out especially for its importance in early Christian history.

A Significant Center for Christianity
Colossae is known through the New Testament, particularly from Paul's Epistle to the Colossians. This letter, addressed to the early Christian community in the city, reveals Colossae’s role as an active center of Christian faith in the early centuries. In this sense, the city holds not only archaeological but also theological and historical significance.

A New Chapter for the Academic World
The commencement of excavations at Colossae has been met with great excitement by the academic community. Until now, knowledge of the site had been limited to surface findings. Now, with systematic excavations, tangible data will be unearthed — including architectural structures, inscriptions, and material evidence of daily life. This will allow for a deeper understanding of both regional history and the Christian heritage of Anatolia.

Led by expert archaeologists from Pamukkale University and supported by scholars from various disciplines, the excavations aim to redefine Colossae’s place in historical narratives. The work is also expected to make significant contributions to cultural tourism in the region.

Excavated for the First Time
Unlike many other ancient cities in Anatolia, Colossae had never been excavated — until now. With the start of this project in 2025, a major gap in archaeological literature and local history will begin to be filled. In the first phase, the excavation team will focus on identifying public buildings, possible church structures, and necropolis areas.
