A site in northeast Ethiopia, also known as the Afar locality. Hominid fossils found here date back about three million years, and include the most complete early hominid skeleton ever found (‘Lucy’), an individual not much over 90 cm tall. This skeleton and a series of skull pieces have been attributed to a new species, Australopithecus afarensis, but may be indistinguishable from A. africanus (see Australopithecus). Claims of stone tool-making at about 2.7 million years ago have also been made.
